Emirates FA Cup 2019/20 Third Qualifying Round

It's the third qualifying round this weekend, so I got to wondering if Birmingham City had ever appeared in this stage of the competition. It turns out that they have, albeit when the Cup was a very different beast, back when Villa were good (we're in Queen Victoria days here) and the mighty Blues went under their original Small Heath Alliance name. Two appearances in the third qualifying round and two wins. Thanks to the Football Club History Database, here goes...

1889/90 season - winner, winner chicken dinner against Leek, 4-0
1890/91 season - back of the net, 5-1, against Wednesbury Old Athletic

100% in the third qualifying round!

Third Qualifying Round: 5 October 2019

Of course the winners of the FA Cup get to appear in the Charity, now Community Shield. Any club that has appeared in this match has appeared in it more times than Blues. Having never won the FA Cup or been League Champions, Blues have never had the pleasure.

Of course, that hasn't stopped some clubs from appearing. Scholars of the game will already know all this, but for the record, the Charity/Community shield has only been in its current consistent Cup Winners/League Winners form since 1974.

From 1971 to 1973 the winners of the cup and league all declined to play, leaving Leicester City (division two champs), Manchester City (4th in top-flight division one) and Burnley (division two champs) as winners.

Before that there were appearances by an FA Select XI, English FA Canadian Touring XI, English World Cup XI, English Professionals XI, English Amateurs XI and - to get to the whole point of this train of thought, in 1927, Corinthian who lost in the match that year to Cardiff City.

Corinthian FC, the Corinthian spirit, the club that is often credited with spreading the game around the world, the source of the Real Madrid white strip. Corinthian FC 1882-1939.

In 1939, Corinthian FC merged with Casuals FC and thus Corinthian Casuals 'The Casuals' were born. They are currently members of the Isthmian League Premier Division and were in FA Cup action this weekend.

Also playing this weekend were a bunch of Kings. King's Lynn FC (The Linnets) and Kingstonian FC (The K's) to name two. But, literally 'The Kings' are Kings Langley FC (founded in 1886) from the Southern League Premier Division Central.

Kings Langley FC versus Corinthian Casuals FC

Kings v Casuals. Both of these teams are Level 7 EFL/Level 3 NLS. For Kings Langley, this is their first time at this stage of the Cup (at their 10th attempt) and for Corinthian Casuals, their first appearance at this stage for 36 years. Entry £11, Programme £2, Excellent cheeseburger & chips £4.

Attendance: my estimate 400, actual 362 (from @CorinthianCas Twitter account).

The Kings reigned supreme over the Casuals in this one. A pretty competitive opening and early midfield battle saw a good effort at both ends before Kings Langley took the lead after 16 minutes through Mitchell Weiss. That opener really dictated the flow of the game. While there was no shortage of effort from either team, The Casuals only occasionally showed what they can do.

Midway through the first half, some wizardry from Lloyd Doyley down the right continued the pressure from Kings, forcing a good save from Daniel Bracken in the Casuals goal. The right side of the pitch continued to provide good value for Kings as the game went on.

1-0 at half-time.

Some more things to note...

1. Several lost balls
2. A very frequent and regular train service between Watford and Bletchley occasionally drowning out the enthusiastic supporters of both Kings and Casuals.
3. My first red card of the 2019/20 Road to Wembley - Muhanad Maan of The Casuals saw red in the 77th minute for a bit of a late one.

By that point, it was 3-0 to Kings Langley. The second half had started with some decent early Casuals pressure, but after 65 minutes (another good move down the right) Mitchell Weiss made it 2-0, shortly followed by skipper Roddy Collins making it 3-0 with a header from a well taken corner. And that was that. 3-0 to Kings Langley and through to the 4th qualifying round for the first time ever!!

The other Kings remain in the hat too. King's Lynn 2-0 victors away at Leek Town and Kingstonian facing a replay with Weston Super Mare after a 1-1 draw.

Thanks to both teams for another step on the Road to Wembley and to the Kings Langley folks for hosting a good afternoon. Best of luck to both teams for the rest of the season.

The bigger guns of the National League join the party in the 4th qualifying round, along with Hednesford - the only other team I've seen so far remaining in the draw. Cray Wanderers (1-0 defeat to Haringey Borough), Salisbury (4-2 defeat to Margate) and Chertsey Town (6-1 loss to Maldon and Tiptree) all seeing their journey end in the 3QR.
